There are concerns that often appear in internet search queries but are difficult to discuss with those around us. Labiaplasty is one such concern.

A Different Shape and the Need for Surgery Are Not the Same

The labia minora vary in size and shape from person to person. Some individuals have a simple form, while others have a more complex one. However, a different shape or a larger size in itself does not necessarily mean surgery is needed.

Looking at the numbers might actually put your mind at ease. Over 50% of individuals have labia minora that extend beyond the labia majora, and about 50% do not have symmetrical left and right sides. Studies report an average size of around 15mm, but "average" means that there are many individuals who are much larger or smaller than that.

The most common question we hear in the consultation room is, "Is this normal?" Many people worry that they might be abnormal because it's an area that cannot be compared with others. It's similar to wondering if your eyes are too small or your nose is too low when looking at your face.

So, When Do We Recommend Surgery?

The criterion is not size, but discomfort.

We discuss surgery if there is pain, if the labia minora get caught or are so large that they need to be folded, causing inconvenience in daily life, or if friction leads to a worsening of the skin condition. The presence of actual pain and daily discomfort is the key factor in our judgment.

You Should Be the One to Make the Decision

It is perfectly fine to undergo the procedure if you are experiencing discomfort. However, if you say you want to do it because of your boyfriend, we tend to advise against it. This is because if the reason for your decision comes from outside yourself, your satisfaction with the results may also waver.

For those who have decided on surgery, you are probably most curious about the results. According to a 2024 study, approximately 94% reported satisfaction. However, high satisfaction rates do not mean that everyone should undergo the procedure.

In Summary

There is no need to consider surgery simply because your size or shape differs from others. We recommend first assessing whether you are experiencing actual pain or daily discomfort, and if that judgment is difficult, please consult with us to confirm your condition.
